The Mission
More than 11,000 foster children are currently in foster care throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, according to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
There is no set time period a foster child will spend with a foster family and with the success stories there are also daily, unique challenges that we are committed to helping with in honor of Edda Mae, a Mom to many who opened her home and heart to many foster children.
The Challenges
The Challenges Facing Foster Parents
Financial Resources
Financial Resources
Some children might arrive with personal possessions, and some will arrive with nothing and foster parents will be responsible for providing adequate clothing and personal care items. This does not take into consideration additional meals and needs.
Dealing with Trauma
Dealing with Trauma
All children enter foster care with different memories, some are happy, some are sad and there are some that are worse than sad. Foster parents often are not equipped to identify trauma reflected in a host of challenging behaviors.
Often a first-time foster parent will need classes and parental support to help to prevent PTSD in Children. These resources are not provided and can be a financial challenge over time.
Frequent Appointments
Frequent Appointments
Foster parents are responsible for transporting children to and from all their appointments which is costly in addition to frequent time off to allow them to be present for all appointments.
The Impact
Edda Mae opened her heart and home to 300 children during her life because of her love for children and commitment to the future generation. We are committed to honoring her beliefs and principles by providing support to Foster Parents in Dallas County.
Many Foster parents come out short when dealing with the combination of needs necessary to successfully care for a Foster child. Our organization provides Meal, Gas and Clothing vouchers to help Foster Parents know that they are not alone. We believe it takes a village to raise a child.
Thanks to our partners and your support we will also be providing The Edda Mae Foundation scholarship in the field of finance.
